School supply lists for the 2018-2019 school year are now available

Attention Parents of students entering 5th grade for the 2018-2019 school year:

(July 5, 2018) The Annual 5th Grade Nature’s Classroom trip to Silver Bay will take place April 22-25, 2019.

5th Graders Graduate from DARE Program

(June 5, 2018) The DARE program, sponsored by the Columbia County Sheriff's Department, celebrated 27 years at Ichabod Crane with the DARE Graduation on Friday, June 1. The D.A.R.E program, which stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education, is a 10-week classroom program taught by Deputy Wendy Guntert. Learn More


Fifth Grade Completes Fall & Spring Art Residencies



(June 1, 2018) Fifth grade students completed fall and spring art residencies with photographer, Sasha Sicurella. Over 600 student works of art were on display in the Elementary School. Students explored identity through self-portraits, oil portraits, shadow portraits, mask-making, and personal flags. Learn More


Jermain/Wheeler's 5th grade Class Transforms into Western World Expo

(June 1, 2018) Mrs. Jermain and Mrs. Wheeler's 5th grade class transformed their classroom into a Western World Expo on May 22, 2018.

Each "travel agency" immersed themselves in the culture, history, government, and people of the United States (Liberty RidersTravel Agency, Brazil (Brazilian Funky Monkey Travel Agency), Mexico (Salso's Travel Agency), and Canada (Maple Leaf Travelers). Visiting students, families, and guests tasted local samples, including Canadian Nanaimo bars, Mexican guacamole, Brazilian chocolates and cassava chips, and US Boston Creme Pie (plus chocolate chip cookies!)

Grade 5 Boat Trip

Congratulations to fifth grader, Elena Pantoja, winner of the annual Boat Trip Design Contest. Elena received the top vote out of 64 entries. The fifth grade Captain JP Boat Trip is on Thursday, June 14.

 

 

 

 

 


 

 


5th Grade Enjoys Annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration

Fifth graders celebrated Cinco de Mayo with a fiesta, complete with "walking tacos" and ice cream sundaes. The fiesta is part of their Western World culture studies. Special thanks to our family volunteers for their help and food donations.

  • May 1 & 2: Math
  • May 29: Grades 4 & 8 Science (performance)

Jump Rope for Heart Fundraiser Raises Over $10,000!!!

(April 2, 2018) Ichabod Crane Elementary School concluded its Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser for the American Heart Association with an assembly on March 28. Physical education teacher Mr. Vooris announced the school raised $10,174 crushing last year by $3,000! Learn More

Elementary/Middle School Students Engage in No-Name Calling Activities

(Feb. 6, 2018) During the month of January, Ichabod Crane Middle School's Friends of Rachel worked with Pawsitive Peers to organize national No-Name Calling activities for the elementary/middle school students.

During the week of January 15, students were asked to write poems, essays and songs or create a poster that represented what No-Name calling meant to them. Several students participate in this activity. As part of this week, homeroom teachers nominated the one student from their homeroom who showed kindness and respect throughout the week. Each of the students received a certificate of recognition and their pictures were taken. Learn More

ES Friends of Rachel Club Brings 'Be Kind Day' to School

(Dec. 11, 2017) ES Friends of Rachel Club has been busy creating ways to start a chain reaction of kindness and positive thoughts. The Positive Message mini posters are currently on display in the ES/MS hallway. Friday, December 1, 2017 was the official Be Kind Day when all ES students and staff wore hand-decorated Be Kind bands. Great job!! View Facebook album


Ichabod Elementary Students Participate in Martin Van Buren Ceremony

(Dec. 5, 2017) Ichabod Crane Elementary students participated in a wreath-laying ceremony on December 5 in honor of Martin Van Buren's 235th birthday. Student representatives from each of the 4th grade classrooms spoke during the ceremony. Learn More


Jermain/Wheeler 5th Grade Class Adopts Classroom in Texas

(Oct. 10, 2017) Through Teachers of Tomorrow, Mrs. Jermain and Mrs. Wheeler's fifth graders adopted a Houston, TX fifth grade class that was devastated by Hurricane Harvey. Collecting gift cards and donations through September, they raised $533. This was sent to the teacher, Mrs. Lorena Valle and her students to replenish lost school supplies. Later in the year, they hope to Skype their adopted Houston class. Thank you to everyone who helped this cause. Way to go 5th graders! See Photo


Adirondack Shakespeare Company Visits 4th Grade

(Oct. 6, 2017) The Adirondack Shakespeare Company visited Ichabod Crane Elementary on Oct. 5 to present "Songs of the Iroquois: Turtle Island" to our 4th grade students.

"Turtle Island” tells how people come to populate the earth and to interact with its animals. Adirondack Shakespeare Company wrote the play with the help of Native Americans Tom Porter, a Bear Clan chief; Bill Loran, a Mohawk craftsman; and Kay Olan, a storyteller.

PTA Book Cart in Full Swing at Ichabod Crane Primary and Elementary Schools!


PTA Book Cart
(Sept. 2017) Once a week, students in grades K-5 can purchase new and gently used books for just $0.25 each. Also, all of our teachers are on the lookout for good behavior, and students can earn a coupon for a free book from the book cart. All proceeds are used to purchase new books throughout the year. 

Book cart hours are as follows:

Primary School
8:30am - 8:50 a.m.
Tuesdays: K-1
Thursdays: Grades 2-3

Elementary School
Fridays,  7:25 a.m. - 7:45 a.m.

Thank you to all that help make the PTA book cart successful in getting a book in the hands of our children.


"BackPack Program" Feeds Our Hungriest Students

The program provides backpacks filled with food that is child-friendly, shelf-stable, and easily-consumed. Bags are packed each week by school staff and discreetly distributed to participating children every Friday afternoon.

Since Ichabod Crane’s "BackPack Program" is funded entirely by local donations, the success of the program depends on fundraising efforts. To see how you can help support the BackPack Program in our schools, view the flyer here. All donations are tax deductible. THe ES/MS Backpack coordinator is Jessica Mascolo.

Ichabod Crane Primary School has been involved in the program since 2011 and is coordinated there by Sandra Funk.

Daily Hours: 7:40 a.m. – 2:03 p.m.
(Students may enter the building as early as 7:25 a.m.)
After Hours: 2:05 – 3:30 p.m.
Office Hours: 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
