Juniors & Seniors Hear from Drunk Driver Victim & Experience Mock Crash Before Prom

(May 11, 2017) On this day before Prom, the Ichabod Crane High School SADD/Youth Ambassadors wanted to remind their peers of the danger of drinking and driving. They brought in guest Sandy LaPlante to speak to juniors and seniors in an assembly before the students experienced a DWI mock crash.

Ms. LaPlante spoke as a victim of a drunk driver. In June 2014, she and her fiancé were riding their motorcycle when a man driving an SUV hit them. In doing so, he severed her left leg resulting in amputation.

“I literally got the life sentence here. I have to struggle every day with everything I do. Nothing comes easy to me anymore,” said LaPlante.

Afterwards, the students went out back of the high school to see a DWI two car mock crash in which six of their peers who are SADD/Youth Ambassadors played the roles of patients - three injured, one critically injured and transported by helicopter, one deceased and one driver placed in custody for DWI. Extrication of trapped victims was performed by rescue technicians from the Niverville Fire Department.

Through this simulated accident, the agencies emphasized the reality of the results of bad choices, including drinking and driving and distracted driving as a result of cell phones and friends in the vehicle.

Parents are encouraged to talk to their teen about what they heard and saw and remind their teen driver about making safe choices, especially when behind the wheel.

A special thank you to the Valatie Rescue Squad, Columbia County 911, Niverville Fire Department, Columbia County Sheriff's Office, NYS Police, LifeNet NY Helicopter, Columbia County Stop DWI and French, Gifford, Preiter & Blasl Funeral Homes for each of their roles in providing thisimportant simulation to our students. Thank you to Sandy LaPlante for sharing her story, Van Allen Auto for supplying the vehicles, ICHS Principal Craig Shull and School Resource Deputy Toby VanAlstyne for their support and SADD advisors Jean Barford and Maureen Sgambelluri.
