Primary School Gets New Outdoor Garden

(May 3, 2017) On April 28, representatives from TerraCycle, Toms of Maine and Hannaford helped install Ichabod Crane Primary School’s new outdoor garden made from recycled natural care waste products. The school won the most votes in the Tom’s of Maine and TerraCycle contest that was open to schools enrolled in the Hannaford Helps initiative.

The raised garden beds are made from recycled plastic collected through Tom’s of Maine’s and TerraCycle’s Natural Care Recycling Program. Students will grow a combination of annual and perennial plants, and the school’s goal is for classes to meet outside and use the area as a learning space.

After the installation of the garden there was a ceremony including guest speakers from the companies represented as well as a ribbon cutting.

"I am so thankful to Hannford, TerraCycle and Tom's of Maine for helping to create this new learning space for our students,” said Principal Suzanne Guntlow. “With the daily encouragement of Katy Nichols, the whole school community worked together to win the contest. Miss Addison, the Primary School art teacher, has already begun garden designs for the new beds and is working with our garden club to make the whole area an inviting spot for classrooms to visit."
