Superintendent Michael Vanyo Addresses Faculty & Staff on Opening Day

(Aug. 29, 2017) Today, Ichabod Crane faculty and staff returned for three days of professional development and preparation for the new school year. During his opening day remarks, new Superintendent Michael Vanyo welcomed staff, discussed the work on district goals, shared his vision for the district and reminded teachers that student success begins with them.

"I challenge all of you to look into the mirror this school year, take some risk and realize how powerful you are in regard to helping mold and guide the future for our students," Vanyo said. "If we want our graduates to become competitive, life-long learners and determined to make the world a better place for everyone in the future, then we have the responsibility to connect with every student in our class."

Vanyo shared that the Board of Education met with NYSSBA this summer to start the development process for creating new goals. Work on the 2018 goals will continue in October for the Board of Education and administrative team.

Continuing to improve the graduate rate and student achievement at Ichabod Crane will be Vanyo's focus. In addressing the district's nearly 90 percent graduate rate, he said, "I believe we can do better. We can't be complacent."

To get there Vanyo said he will be focusing on Literacy - reading, writing, speaking and problem solving - in every grade K-12 and data to help guide our future. He also said he'll spend the year listening and visiting classrooms to learn about Ichabod Crane.
