Board Approves 2017-18 Tax Warrant; School Tax Collection Begins Sept. 1

(Aug. 24, 2017) At its meeting on August 22, the Ichabod Crane Central School District Board of Education approved the 2017-18 tax warrant including the tax rates. The tax levy, which is the total amount the district will collect in taxes, is $22,781,192 – the amount voters approved in May.

Using final assessment figures provided by the seven towns in the district and equalization rates set by the state, the new tax rates are as follows:

Tax rates vary for each town based on equalization rates set by the NY Office of Real Property Tax Services (ORPTS). After the towns submit final assessment information to the ORPTS, the state assigns each community an equalization rate to account for these differences in assessment practices. This is an effort to fairly distribute the amount of taxes each town must pay.

It is important to note that the district does not control any part of the assessment or equalization process. The tax levy – or the total amount to be raised by all taxpayers – is the only part of the tax rate calculation that the district controls.

Tax Collection Sept. 1-30 No Penalty; Oct. 1-30 2% Penalty

School tax bills are mailed out in late August. As in past years, all branches of the National Union Bank of Kinderhook will be collecting taxes during normal business hours. Tax payments may also be mailed to: Donna E. Leiser, Deputy Collector C/O Kinderhook Bank, PO Box 428, Kinderhook, N.Y. 12106.

Tax bills may be paid, without penalty, during the period September 1 through September 30, 2017. All taxes paid October 1 through October 30, 2017 shall bear an interest charge of two percent (2%). The return of the warrant expires on October 31, 2017. All taxes remaining unpaid on that date plus penalty may be paid, pending county board approval, to the County Treasurer’s Office, Columbia County, Hudson, NY 12534 or to the County Treasurer’s Office, Rensselaer County, Troy, NY 12180, as applicable, from November 13, 2017 to November 27, 2017. After November 27, 2017 taxes and penalty will be added to the applicable town tax.

Credit Card Payments Accepted for School Taxes
The Ichabod Crane Board of Education accepts online credit card payments for school tax bills. Taxpayers may access this service online at Although the Kinderhook Bank will still be accepting payments by check or cash, as they have in prior years, the option to pay by credit card is available only online.

While the District incurs no costs for making this service available, those taxpayers taking advantage of this new service should be aware there will be a convenience fee charged by Municipay for processing the credit card payments. Taxpayers will be charged 2.65% of their tax bills or a minimum of $3 convenience fee charged when paying by credit card.
