Ichabod Crane District News and Information

SPECIAL EVENT- FIELD DEDICATION CEREMONY

On August 5, 2008, the Ichabod Crane Board of Education passed a resolution officially naming the newly upgraded athletic facilities the “E. GORDON VAN BUREN ATHLETIC COMPLEX.” The complex, which is adjacent to the High School on Route 9 in Valatie, includes softball and baseball fields, 8-lane track, concession stand and tennis courts. These improvements were the result of a recent capital project approved by local voters and a grant-in-aid for the tennis courts supplied by former Assemblyman John Faso on land donated by Hudson River Savings Foundation.

“Gordie” has been synonymous with the history of Ichabod Crane; his coaching career in boys’ basketball and soccer is legendary. To acknowledge and show our appreciation for his contribution to the District, to commemorate the history of Ichabod Crane and look forward to its future, a dedication ceremony was held on Sat., Sept. 27, 2008 at 2 p.m. Many of Gordie’s friends, former students, athletes, fellow coaches, students, staff, and community members participated in this special occasion.

James Dexter, Superintendent of Schools, welcomed all to the event and recognized past and present board of education members, past and present athletic directors, former superintendents, ICC players, cheerleaders, coaches, alumni, public officials, and the District's architectural firm responsible for the completion of the complex. William Schneider, High School Principal, served as Master of Ceremonies. A resolution form the New York State Senate was presented by Sen. Stephen Saland. Speakers highlighting Gordie's career were Daralene C. Jewell, Superintendent of Schools (Retired); Frank Durkin, Friend, ICC Teacher (Retired) and current ICC coach; Patrick Snyder, ICC player, teacher and coach (retired from Schodak C.S.D.); and Ronald Gabriel, ICC alumnus, teacher (retired), current coach and official. Charles Shattenkirk, Co-President of the Ichabod Crane Sports Booster Club, presented Mr. and Mrs. Van Buren with ICC apparel and a "Rider" blanket. Students representing athletic teams from grades K-12 assisted Mr. Van Buren with the "official" ribbon cutting along with Board President, John Phillips, who reiterated the theme of the event, "Honoring the past, celebrating the present, and looking to the future." The Ichabod Crane Marching Band performed the "Star Spangled Banner," and the ceremony was concluded with the singing of the "Ichabod Crane Alma Mater." A sign with the new name of the complex has been erected at the entrance of the fields.

A reception/bar-b-que prepared and served by the ICC Food Service Staff was sponsored by the Booster Club.
