Martin H. Glynn Elementary School, located in Valatie, was named for the village's favorite son who served as governor of New York from 1913 to 1915.
Our school year has had a wonderful start. Our two open houses were very well attended. I had the opportunity to speak with many of you during those two nights, heard many positive comments, and look forward to continued communication in reference to the school year. I have been very pleased with the student, parent and teacher enthusiasm that is essential for a successful 2008-09.
I want to thank the parents of all of our students for your understanding concerning some transportation delays during the first few weeks of school. These things do take time to smooth out, and I think that everything is on track now. Starting in October, some of the 5th graders will be starting band and chorus. Please make sure that you read all flyers that go home since there are times when band or chorus will not meet. We often have children left at the Middle School with no one to watch them. The Middle School Office has been good about keeping them until they can get a bus to bring them to MHG or MVB but we would like to eliminate those situations all together.
I mentioned earlier that our Open Houses were very well attended. As you know, the PTA sponsors a Book Fair on those same nights. I am pleased to say the both schools have greatly surpassed their average sales for these nights. An unofficial total was around $1,300 for MHG and nearly $1,500 for MVB. With this sale, the PTA earns credits that are good for the acquisition of new books for our libraries. I have witnessed an increasing interest in reading and literature with our students that I have to partly credit Mrs. Elizabeth Kelly, our librarian, and Mrs. Cathy Draper, our library teaching assistant. Mrs. Kelly and Mrs. Draper have worked hard to update our libraries and introduce new and exciting titles for which there are often waiting lists. This combined with the focus on the literacy curriculum presented by our teaching staff will make a huge difference in the reading capabilities of our students.
Always remember that I can be reached for any of your concerns, comments or questions. My phone numbers are 758-7559 (MHG) or 758-7569 (MVB). Have a wonderful beginning to Fall.
