We have literacy centers daily. Each center is approximately 15 minutes long. During this time children are independently practicing important literacy skills. While children are working at centers, I meet with small groups for guided reading. Each guided reading group meets with me at least 3 times per week. Literacy Centers in Our Classroom: Listening Center: Children listen to a story on tape (often a story based around our weekly theme). Reader Response: Each week, children complete a response to a story they read. Often this story is one of our weekly required texts. Poetry: We have a "Poem of the Week" which we read daily during morning meeting. At this center children will read the poem with a partner (to practice fluent reading and expression) and illustrate the poem in their poetry folder. Word Work: Children practice their spelling words and target words. Throughout the year we'll be using different materials to practice these words, such as magnetic letters, bean letters, wikki sticks, and letter stamps. Picture Sort: Children sort words and pictures based on categories, beginning and ending sounds, and word families. Partner Read: Children read a book with a partner. This helps children practice fluent reading. Read the Room: Children use a clipboard and magic glasses (which help them see all the words in the room). They search the room for certain words (depending on our focus for the week), and write words they can read on their sheet.
