BECOMING A MEDIATOR | |
The peer mediation program is not a club. We do not elect officers or have regular weekly meetings. If interested, you will be asked to attend an informational meeting at which time you may sign up for training. It is expected that all mediators will attend a training session, which is held during a regularly schedule school day. Interested students are asked to meet with the advisors and complete a questionnaire. A permission slip from a parent or guardian is required to attend the full-day class.
Upon completion of training, it is expected that you will be available during lunch or study hall to participate in mediation. In rare instances, it may be necessary to schedule a session during class time. We make every effort to keep students in class, however if necessary, it is the mediator’s responsibility to make up any missed work.In addition to regular mediations, you may be asked to perform mock mediations for safety workshops during study halls, informational presentations, open house or 8th grade orientation. Don’t worry…these are voluntary situations. The mandatory training session which takes place in early fall will give you the confidence you need to participate.Depending on availability, a mediator may go a whole year without mediating any sessions or be asked to mediate five times. Due to this fact, it is important that students attend the yearly refresher class offered each October. Any mediator not attending this class will be eliminated from the list and no longer be considered an active member.
