Ichabod Crane Central School District

Getting to the Mediation Table

In the event that a student, parent or staff member feels or witnesses some type of conflict, they can request mediation.
Request forms are located throughout the school in the main office, guidance office, library and teacher mail room.    Forms should be completed and placed in Mrs. Barlow's or Mrs. Barford’s mailbox.
When a request is made for mediation, we try to schedule the session as soon as possible. Mediators are chosen based on availability.

Generally, there will be two mediators and two disputants attending. At times, newly trained mediators may observe a session. One adult is also present in the room at all times. This person does not play an active role.
Once a referral is made, the specifics of the mediation will be held confidential. All notes are destroyed and only a contract will be kept on file.
Mediation is voluntary. If after hearing the rules of mediation a disputant does not wish to participate, they can decline.
A mandatory mediation is one requested by an administrator, often in response to a conflict that may garner disciplinary action. This is a choice given to the disputants to try to solve their problem. For these mediations, the disputants are strongly advised to try to resolve the situation.
