ICC Senior Emma Scheitinger proudly wore red, instead of her beloved Rider blue, beaming, as she celebrated a major accomplishment and milestone, surrounded by her family, friends, teachers, coaches and many more.
The large, supportive group came together in the high school library this week to celebrate Emma, after she signed a National Letter of Intent with Stony Brook University on Long Island, setting her up to join the Division 1 Seawolves Softball Team for the 2024 season.
“It was so overwhelming to see so many people come out to support me. I am so thankful for their support then, and for all the years prior,” Emma said. “I am super excited for the next chapter. I will miss my Rider family, but cannot wait to officially be a Seawolf.”
After playing shortstop for Ichabod’s Girls Varsity Softball team, which won States last year with a 25-0 record, Emma will play center field for the Seawolves, changing her team colors from blue and white, to red and blue.
“She’s a leader on and off the field and will be greatly missed,” said Tracy Nytransky McComb, Girls Varsity Softball Ball Head Coach. “She’s one of the hardest working players I’ve coached and she just has fun playing the game. I know we will all be following her success and career at Stony Brook.”
In a recent Stony Brook press release, Head Coach Megan T. Bryant announced Emma’s signing, welcoming her to the Seawolves Softball family. In the release, Bryant also announced the signing of Daniella Sofia from Long Island.
“Both are outstanding students and athletes who are a great fit for our program personally, academically and athletically.,” said Bryant in the release. “Daniella and Emma have the skill set, competitive drive and softball IQ to make an immediate contribution to the success of Seawolves Softball. Offensively and defensively, they bring power, speed, range and strong arms to our lineup.”
Emma, a multi-season athlete, has acquired a long list of accolades, including 2022 All State First Team, 2021 All State Second Team, Colonial Council MVP 2022, ICC Team MVP 2022, and Colonial Council All-Star in 2021 and 2022. In 2022, she led the Riders softball team with a batting average of .584, 56 hits, 54 runs scored, and was second in RBIs, with 50.
“Emma has been an outstanding student-athlete for Ichabod Crane,” said ICC Athletic Director Dave Ames. “She is a leader in the classroom and on the field. She has led us to a sectional championship in volleyball, as well as multiple sectional championships and a state championship in softball. We wish her good luck next year at Stony Brook University!”
Superintendent Suzanne Guntlow echoed Ames’ sentiment about Emma, and her contributions to ICC, both on and off the field and court.
“Emma really does exemplify what it means to be a Rider,” Superintendent Guntlow said. “She has excelled in so many different ways, and we are all very proud of her. We will miss her spirit and dedication to ICC, but we wish her all the luck next year and cannot wait to see what her future holds.”
